Called "The Founding Apple," the Newtown Pippin apple has a long and historic tale. Newtown Pippin originated in 1730 by chance from a seed (or pip) near the village of Newtown on Long Island, NY. It quickly became a favorite of the colonists, including founding fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In fact, while visiting France, Jefferson stated "They have no apples here to compare with our Newtown Pippin." As time passed, the sleepy village of Newtown was swallowed into New York City and the Newtown Pippin apple lost it's popularity.
Blueberries and apples, unified together in a dance of fermentation; the fruits of summer blended with the harvest of autumn. The light, sweet, delicate flavors and aromas of the apples mix with the strong, earthy, dry flavor of the Duke blueberries. This boldly purple mix is fermented through the winter and is aged just long enough for the two fruits to create a delicate balance. The result is a beautiful blush cider which is unique among its peers!
Blended using over a dozen varieties of traditional bittersweet and bittersharp cider apples, including Kingston Black, Dabinett, and Yarlington Mill, Citizen is a delicious and refreshing cider. Fermented to dryness and sweetened ever so slightly with organic cane sugar, Citizen's taste conquers even the most reserved and trying of palates. Carbonation is modest yet satisfying, allowing you to enjoy the bold tannins and spirited astringency that embodies the essence of traditional craft cider.
